The Great Cover-up

In winter, we wear coats to keep warm. But in spring, summer and autumn, when the weather is unpredictable or you want to layer without melting, it’s all about kimonos and duster coats. They come in different lengths, colours and prints, and it seems like my wardrobe is full of ones I’ve collected over the years. The latest addition is this floral one from Hope & Harvest, and it’s my first real foray into this full length style.

A couple of things I’m loving about this particular style is that it has pockets (which I think everything should have, because pockets) and it’s designed so while the sleeves look lovely and long and drapey, when you go to use your arms the sleeves aren’t in your way. They’re gathered on one side, meaning that you have much freer use of your arms, you have to worry a lot less about getting your sleeve in your food and the fabric doesn’t swamp your wrist/hand.

I think my biggest question with this kind of lightweight jacket is “what the heck do I wear it with”? I think this longer style gives me a few more options that look very different than the shorter kimonos I’ve worn in the past. I’ve styled it with jeans and a tee and sneakers here, just like I would with a shorter robe, and I think this will still be my go to look, but I have a couple of other ideas as well.

  • Over a maxi dress, probably a close fitting one rather than loose to create a bit of contrast, paired with sandals
  • As a cover-up over a bathing suit at the beach or pool
  • With leggings and a tee to make me look way more together than I really am (you know those days)

How would you style this kimono duster?
