Aussie Curves: Homemade

AUSSIE CURVES headerIt’s the final week of the first year of Aussie Curves, and even though I was a very late joiner I have had a wonderful time creating outfits to fit in with the challenges. I’m really looking forward to the next year, and you can expect a whole lot more outfits from me! This week is all about the homemade…

Homemade Maxi DressOkay, so I have a confession to make – I didn’t actually make this dress.  My mom did. She’s pretty handy with a sewing machine, she also made me this dress.

I wore this outfit to New Zealand Fashion Week last year and received heaps of compliments from local designers. Thanks for making me look super cool, Mom!

Homemade Maxi DressI was on the hunt for a maxi dress and hated all the fabrics of the ones in my size.  When in doubt, grab a pattern and some fabric and make your own (or, convince someone awesome to make it for you). The bonus of a homemade garment is that it can be custom-fit to your shape!

Homemade Maxi DressI am wearing this with a top underneath because a) it’s freezing at the moment and b) the front is super low cut and shows a bit too much cleavage.  I’m thinking that I might add in a modesty panel…

Homemade Maxi DressAlso, can we just take a moment to talk about my hair? Changing hair colour has totally changed this outfit for me. I feel like I really stand out even though I’m wearing all black.

Thanks! I’m so excited about learning how to sew, hopefully I can make stuff this awesome. To start off with it’ll be simple skirts though 🙂

Killer dress and hair. Love the green on you!

Thanks Pearl! The dress is actually black with a white print, but for some reason it’s showing up as green. Whomp whomp. Glad it looks great in green too though!

your hair is sensational, i love the colour and the curls!
Your mum is awesome, she did a great job on the dress, I quite like it with the long sleeved tee underneath, very versitile and can be worn in winter this way 🙂

This looks stellar on you! And your hair is fab. Definitely sets off the outfit. Where do you find your patterns? I’m a similar size/shape to you and can never find anything nice x

Thanks Jordan! I can’t remember where this pattern came from, your local fabric shop should have patterns. My favourites are Simplicity and Butterick, both of which I think you can order online if you can’t find them instore. If you’re in New Zealand, I recommend visiting Spotlight as well. Hope that helps!

I love your hair colour and the soft curls. I am a red head, but I occasionally dye my hair to fix up greys or sun bleaching. The red shade you have is exactly the one I most covet!

Thanks Chaucey! I’ve been coveting this shade of red for so long, I always wished I was born a redhead x
