Body positive hashtags to follow on instagram // Meagan Kerr

Need a little bit of a body positive boost? Instagram is jam packed with awesome posts from babes sharing the body love, and no matter what size or shape you are, you’re bound to find some fab self love inspiration. Not sure where to start? here are some of my top body positive hashtags to follow on instagram

#fatgirlscan

As fat women we are so often told what we can’t do. People don’t believe how flexible I am or that I do yoga regularly. They are surprised to hear that Glam lifts weights and skates in a derby league. Well guess what? Fat girls can wear stripes, fat girls can be doctors, fat girls can ride motorbikes, fat girls can dance, fat girls can have sex … there is no end to what we can do. Check out the hashtag started by Jes from The Militant Baker and be inspired!

#honormycurves

Throw back to wake surfing this summer and laughing through every fall and climb back up and to not starting with a rope. When I was younger I was a lot more timid about what my body could and couldn’t accomplish. I had been sold every lie about a plus size woman’s capabilities when it comes to sports, activities, and all those things that seemed meant for only classically fit people. I was living the life of someone who couldn’t do many things, selling myself short before I even attempted to do them. Today I attempt, I flail, I fall, I surprise myself with what I can do, I try, I laugh, I decide I won’t do some things again, I decide I want to get better at others. But overall I do let my body see for itself, rather than making assumptions based on falsehoods I picked up along the way. And in that I #HonorMyCurves so much better than I ever could even fathom in most of my young life. A photo posted by I am Honor Curves // 🇨🇦 (@honorcurves) on

Canadian self love advocate Honor’s message is simple: own your body, accept yourself and never apologise for your beauty. So many people have picked up on this, with more than 350,000 posts using the hashtag to share their personal style, inspiration and so much self love.

#effyourbeautystandards

With over one million posts to this hashtag, model Tess Holliday has started one of the most used hashtags in the body positive movement. Popular with people of all ages, sizes and backgrounds, this hashtag is used to share everything from people’s latest makeup look to their no makeup selfies, with outfit photos, inspirational quotes and words of wisdom galore. Make sure you also follow the Eff Your Beauty Standards account, where some great ‘grams are reposted.

#alternativecurves

I love this hashtag because it gives me so many cool alternative style ideas. Started by Canadian style blogger Margot Meanie, this is a great place to get and share alternative style inspo – great for those whose tastes run a little outside mainstream fashion. There is also an #alternativecurves account that reposts some of their favourite looks.

#rebelliousselflove

Margot Meanie has been a busy wee witch and has another hashtag that’s well worth checking out. As women in general (but especially as plus size women), loving yourself is an act of rebellion. Rebellion against beauty standards, against the things we are taught from a young age, against all the people who tell us that we are too much or not enough. I love that people share moments where they’re loving themselves, or showing themselves love, because I think that’s something that everyone could be doing more of. I’m hoping she’ll run another #rebelliousselflove challenge soon!

#ImNoModelEither

I first came across writer Amanda Richards’ #ImNoModelEither hashtag while I was getting annoying at the lack of diversity in Lane Bryant’s #ImNoAngel campaign. Richards shared pictures of herself in lingerie and encouraged others to do the same, which started a really important conversation in the body positive community about diversity – something that it seems many brands sadly still have not picked up on. I’ve spoken before about why bloggers are so incredibly important for diversity within fashion, and it’s cool to see so many more people wanting that as well.
