Khayt

Fat Girls Shouldn't Wear Stripes: Khayt HanaraI am at an age where I should know what I’m doing with my life. Truth is, I’m just a big kid, still trying to figure out what I’m all about. But it’s so much fun finding out!

I’ve always been awkward, and when I was younger I felt very insignificant because of how I looked. My ethnic face, my hulking frame, my overweight body … it all was a recurring masculine theme in my teenage years and I held a lot of jealousy towards pretty much everyone around me. I felt like I faded into the background and was worth nothing. As I type this I find myself crying remembering all that bullshit I put up with.

With a super-low self-esteem I promptly got pregnant to my first boyfriend at 20. I was convinced I would only get once chance at a relationship because I was so hideous. I spent my 21st birthday at Pizza Hut getting labour advice from my mum and my aunt over an all-you-can-eat-lunch.

Fat Girls Shouldn't Wear Stripes: Khayt HanaraI knew I was not in a good place, but I was determined not to let my shortcomings and fears pass on to my son. I learned the art of feigning self-confidence; and with it I actually found some. I had to start each day at that point, ready to discover the real me that is buried in my curves. Fuck me, imagine my surprise every morning when I realise that I am the curves. There you go life, NAILED IT *finger snap*

I didn’t know Khayt before we met up for our photo session, but when we met I knew at once I had found a new friend. She’s loving, enthusiastic, beautiful and brilliant. She’s confident and clever, and her personality fills the room with warmth.

I feel so honoured that through this project I am getting to meet so many wonderful women. I think it’s important surround yourself with people who inspire and encourage you, I hope your life is filled with people like that – I know mine is!

I’ve got a few more sets with her for this project, so keep an eye out for those! Definitely hoping to photograph Khayt again as well 😀
