Hips and Curves Plus Size Lingerie Review

I’ve been eyeing up Hips & Curves for ages and ages, because they do really pretty plus size lingerie and I’m quite partial to a saucy bit of lingerie because it makes me feel like a right minx. They reached out to me to see if I wanted to try out a couple of pieces and of course I jumped at the chance because I knew y’all would be interested to hear about the fit and the quality.

So there were a couple of things that I’d been particularly interested in for ages but had never gotten the courage to buy because I’d never seen them on someone my size (more specifically someone with my bust size) and I wasn’t sure how they’d fit. One was a strappy bra (because I’ve seen them on other people and they look how AF) and the other was a bralette (which I find myself wearing more and more at home because they’re super comfortable). So I took the opportunity to order those styles with matching knickers, plus a chemise and a robe. That kind of covers all my bases so I can give you a review of a variety of things.

First up was the Olivia Strappy Lace Bra which I ordered in a 44LG. I was previously an 18J (which I think is 40J?) but my boobs changed size a wee bit and were a little smaller and I thought that was a size that would fit me. Turns out I was very wrong – as you can probably guess by the lack of pictures of me wearing said bra. It wasn’t so much that the cup size didn’t work for me (although that was part of it – just a touch too small) as it was that the straps were not in the right place for the shape of my breasts, and because I’m so full on top they dug into my breast tissue and I looked like, for lack of a better descriptor, a ham. This is a beautiful bra, but unfortunately not the one for me. I think if I’d had a more recent in store sitting and actually knew my size for sure then I probably would have known that a 44 F/G was not for me. Good to know for the future. I’d recommend this style for someone who is smaller busted or is less full on the top of their breasts (or someone who isn’t affected by gravity yet, bless your perky boobs).

The next piece I picked out was the Kira Lace Bralette in a 5X. I sized up in this because I know from previous bralette experience that I need a bit of extra room for my boobs, but unfortunately there just wasn’t enough fabric to account for the effect that gravity and time have had on them. So no photos of that one either, but I will add that this was super comfortable on and the lace was soft and felt lovely on my skin. I’d recommend this style for someone who is smaller busted and much perkier than I am so doesn’t need quite as much coverage or support.

The Kira Stretch Lace Boyshorts, which I got in a 5X, are definitely the “cheekiest” cut of underwear that I own. I’m usually a full briefs kind of gal because I prefer full coverage, but I really like these and they make me feel quite saucy. There’s not as much stomach support as the underwear I usually wear day to day but I think for something I’m more likely to wear when I’m lounging around being a sexpot goddess they’re just great (ha! I wish that was me – I always feel awkward as when I try to be sexy and am more likely to be found wearing these with a comfy top as pictured here).

As with the previous pieces I thought that the Super Soft and Comfy Halter Chemise (which I got in a 5X) wouldn’t work for my bust, but as luck would have it (not really luck so much as a very established sense of style and therefore a well coordinated wardrobe) I have a bra that totally works underneath it in similar colours and patterns. It does still work without the bra (this has a lot more coverage than the bralette), because the halterneck means it’s adjustable, making it perfect for someone like me whose breasts sit naturally lower. However I have to say that I do prefer it with the bra solely because it gives me a lot of lift (shout out to anyone who understands what it’s like to have boobs almost down to their bellybutton).

I want to make mention of just how lovely this chemise is. The lace around the bust is delicate and pretty, and the body of the chemise is the softest stretch fabric that feels lovely against my skin. I’ve seen a lot of lingerie that’s designed to suck you in and hold this bit up and flatten that bit … this isn’t like that. It’s soft and sensual, it drapes itself beautifully on my body and caresses it rather than compresses it. Also worth noting, this piece comes in a whole bunch of different colourways so if you’re not a fan of the black there are plenty of other options.

Last but not least, my favourite piece that I picked out – the Soft & Comfy Robe. I got this in a 5/6X and it’s the same super soft fabric as the body of the chemise. It’s really nice to wear around the house and adds a little bit of sensuality to my day. Meow!

I would have loved for the chemise and the robe to be a little bit longer, just because I find that as someone who has big boobs as well as a belly and a bum (all things that contribute to clothing sitting shorter on me that it would on someone who was smaller of differently shaped) the hemline ends up only barely covering my butt.

Hips & Curves have pretty good regular prices and they’re even better when things are on sale which seems to happen pretty regularly. They stock US sizes 10-28, they do ship internationally (pricing depends on where you’re located but to NZ shipping would have been about US$70 – I’d recommend using YouShop), and they have quite a big variety of things to choose from including some quite sexy costumes if you’re in to a bit of dress up (also great for Halloween!).
