I wanted to be involved in the Fat Girls Shouldn’t Wear Stripes project mostly because the evolution of my style is practically a textbook case of following ‘the rules’ and then realising that they’re completely stupid!
For quite a few years I wore only black and was entirely obsessed with having the right neckline, the right length of skirt, the right cut to hide, ‘flatter’ and minimise!
It took me a while to realise that while in my life I like surrounding myself with shiny things in bright colours, my wardrobe was entirely full of black clothes that didn’t reflect my personality at all.
When I first saw the dress I decided to wear for the shoot, online, my first thoughts were of all the advice to stay away from light colours or shiny fabrics because of all their light-reflecting and highlighting properties.
Nope, not even sorry, the dress was far too pretty to pass up because of some arbitrary line that tries to dictate who can wear pretty shiny clothes. I’ve worn it a number of times and every time someone has given me a compliment, so the dress makes me ridiculously happy. Which is all that really matters.
