Wardrobe Staples: Save vs Splurge

Wardrobe staples for any budget - save vs splurge

When it comes to wardrobe staples, I think that you can find something great no matter what budget you’re working with. I’ve picked out five of my must have wardrobe items and found an option that’s luxe and one that’s less expensive, so you can decide where you’re going to save and where you’ll splurge.

THE LITTLE BLACK DRESS

A go to dress that you can throw on for any occasion is a must have in every wardrobe. Your little black dress can take any form you like, so long as it’s something you feel great in – I like a midi dress with a bit of flare, as I know it is something I would feel comfortable in going to dinner, a job interview or a first date. Side note, I would buy that jersey dress from Yours Clothing in a flash if I wasn’t doing Frugal February, those fluted sleeves are gorgeous!

THE PERFECT JEANS

Finding your perfect fit is not always an easy task, but whether it’s skinny, straight leg, bootleg or boyfriend cut, a great pair of jeans will always be a wardrobe staple. Pair them with a basic white tee and some sneakers for a classic look and you’ll be good to go.

PLAIN WHITE TEE

A white tee is one of the most versatile pieces of clothing you can have in your wardrobe. It can be dressed up or down and paired with almost any kind of bottoms to get the look you want – with jeans, tucked into a skirt, with shorts or even dressed down with leggings or sweatpants. You can go for a v neck, a boat neck, capped sleeves or elbow length, just make sure you keep it crisp and clean.

 TAILORED TROUSERS

A pair of well tailored trousers is an easy go to for the office or any time you need to look polished. Go for navy or black and you’ll be able to mix and match with many things in your wardrobe. If you’ve got short legs like I do, make sure you get the bottoms properly hemmed so they’re the right length for you.

WELL FITTED BLAZER

A blazer goes hand in hand with tailored trousers, and if you can get a matching set to wear as a suit then bonus points to you. It can also be paired with skirts and dresses to smarten up a look, and is great if you want to wear a sleeveless dress but your office dress code requires you to keep your arms covered.

Staples for me are jeans, coloured t shirts and a good pair of flats/sneakers as I have two boys to look after.

For me lately it’s been a black ponte, knee length tube skirt from Taking Shape. Being a pear I never thought I could wear tube skirts, but with some experimentation my little skirt has become a brilliant black basic that I can dress up or down, with shirts, tunics, crop tops and jackets. So much fun and so easy to wear!
