She Lives Cruelty Free

As I find myself becoming more and more conscious of what I put on my skin, I’ve also found myself making the decision to buy more cruelty free beauty and skincare products. I just think it’s so unnecessary to be testing cosmetics on animals – after all, if there are so many companies that don’t do it, surely this is a clear indication that it’s not needed?

In the past, it’s been difficult for many people to make the switch to cruelty free beauty products in New Zealand. What we had available here was expensive, some of the quality wasn’t as good as the other products we used, it was hard to find, or we just didn’t know where to start.

Fortunately there are now a lot of cruelty free brands available in New Zealand, with many of them even locally made. There’s also a great little New Zealand company who has made it their mission to make cruelty free beauty more accessible… I asked Haley and Sam from She Lives Cruelty Free a few questions about making the switch to a cruelty free beauty routine.

Why did you start She Lives Cruelty Free?

A few years ago we started educating ourselves on what ingredients were in our beauty products and where they came from. We realised that the majority of our favourite brands all test their products on animals, and being avid animal lovers we were horrified and refused to support such companies. We then started to research cruelty free brands and re-stock our make up bags and bathroom supplies. This proved very difficult, and the majority of brands were overseas and cost an arm and a leg to ship over. It was also very difficult to decipher which products/brands were cruelty free – even though they may say it on the packaging it doesn’t always mean it’s true. So we created She Lives Cruelty Free (SLCF) to help others, like ourselves, buy cruelty free beauty products. We have made it affordable and accessible, and have done all the research for you!

We want to help educate people into making conscious decisions when doing their skincare or beauty shopping. Even shopping in general, as there are so many companies out there that test on animals, whether they are beauty, food or general living related. The more people we can share SLCF with, the more information people are armed with, which will help towards creating a cruelty free future.

What are your favourite cruelty free products?

Haley: I love the HURRAW! Balms, there are so many flavours to try! The Tailor Masque is a must have to revive tired skin, the Limelily eye shadows and magnetic palettes are pretty rad too!

Sam: I also love HURRAW! Balm in coconut and grapefruit and also the Tailor Moisture. And anything from Sukin.

Do you have any tips for anyone wanting to make the switch to cruelty free beauty/skincare?

It’s fairly easy and affordable. You have to research your products and understand where they come from, and the company behind the brand. It’s all about educating yourself and becoming aware of what you are purchasing. A lot of the cruelty free skincare products are also natural and/or organic so it’s good for your skin and your soul!

She Lives Cruelty Free ships to New Zealand and Australia, and you can find them here.

This is Meagan Kerr goes cruelty free

I have decided to make the switch to cruelty free skincare and beauty. That means not only changing the products I use personally, but also the brands that I work with as a blogger. I think that cosmetic testing on animals is unnecessary, and I want to “put my money where my mouth is”, so to speak. I’ll be putting a lot of effort into researching the brands I work with carefully, to help you make cruelty free choices too.

Keep an eye out over the coming weeks for more cruelty free product reviews, including a couple of my faves from She Lives Cruelty Free

What are your favourite cruelty free brands? Let me know so I can try them out!

    I adore Antipodes.
Their cosmetics are totally certified organic & natural skincare.
It’s an actual pleasure to wear it.

I’ve also decided to go cruelty free and, even though there’s ample to choose from here (big city), it’s been difficult finding a new foundation. Do you have any suggestions for people too light skinned to wear the lightest color that E.L.F carries, by chance?

That’s awesome Ais! Hmm, I’m not too sure about E.L.F’s range because I haven’t tried it yet but I will keep an eye out for you! x

Oh, any cruelty-free foundation would work. E.L.F is so far the only one I’ve tried and it was way too pink/dark. Good luck with your swap to cruelty free 😀

YAY! Cruelty free isnt easy and requires research but is so worth it. Even though I live in Sydney now, I still buy most of my makeup from DollFace. Debbie is based in Lower Hutt and I found her and her range when I was looking for cruelty free options for our wedding. Penny, one of her makeup artists, did my makeup for our big day and it felt wonderful! I totally recommend their products!

I’ve heard lots about DollFace through work but haven’t tried any of their products yet. Thanks for the recommendation though, I’ll have to look in to them! x

Yay for you, I buy nothing but cruelty free for all my cosmetics, shower gels, deodorants, shampoos etc… am now working on changing cleaning products in the home, the only thing I have noticed is that you need to watch the companies close, cause 1 year they may be cruelty free, then next you see them selling in China, which requires all has to be tested on animals before they will sell there. Also is that more and more companies are also switching to cruelty free. I find Leaping Bunny, PETA and SAFE here in NZ with really good updates :).

The amount of companies that claim they’re cruelty free yet sell in China baffles me!
