30 x 30 (Some resolutions for the New Year)

I’ve recently been made aware that 30 isn’t that far away for me – 18 months, in fact.  In light of this, and the impending new year, I thought that this is a great time to sit down and think about what I’d like from my future. Time for some goal setting.

I made a New Years Resolution two years ago to quit smoking, and am proud to say that as of 1st January 2013, I will have been smokefree for TWO WHOLE YEARS! That’s a pretty big deal, and not really something I thought I could achieve. So, now that I know that I have fierce determination and am extremely stubborn, it’s time to set myself some more goals.

I was inspired by Hannah at Dressed In Pixie Dust to create my own version of her 25 by 25 list (obviously doing a 30 by 30 because I have a couple of years on her …). I thought I’d share a few of them with you, both to encourage you to try something similar and because writing this down and sharing it makes me feel accountable! View Post

nzgirl review: Skinnies SPF30 Sungel

We are in the first month of summer and already I am noticing quite a lot of people with nasty sunburn – including a friend of mine who got so badly burnt that her skin blistered. You may laugh this off as being something that just happens sometimes, no biggie, right? Wrong! It’s actually quite serious *imagine me looking very serious here*

According to the Cancer Society of New Zealand, skin cancer is the most common kind of cancer in New Zealand, with our skin cancer rates being among the highest in the world. Over 90% of skin cancer cases are due to excess sun exposure. See, really serious stuff!

Throughout the year, and especially in summer, you need to make sure you slip, slop, slap and wrap! To get you on your way to skin protection, some of nzgirl’s awesome beauty bloggers have reviewed some great sunscreens to bring you nzgirl’s five of the best: sunscreen! I reviewed Skinnies SPF30 Sungel and thought it was so fabulous that I had to dedicate a whole blog post to it!

Skinnies

Skinnies SPF30 Sungel is by far the nicest sunscreen that I’ve ever used.  It smells delicious, feels really nice on your skin, and doesn’t leave any nasty residue.  It’s really easy to apply, and a little goes a long way. You can wear it under makeup straight away, which means that it’s perfect for everyday protection.

What makes this different from your average sunscreen in that it doesn’t contain water – most contain 50-70% water, meaning that they take 20 minutes to dry (while the water evaporates), and when you sweat or swim the sunscreen washes off, which is why you need to reapply every 2 hours. Not with Skinnies! Skinnies dries in 2 minutes, isn’t greasy or white and you only need to apply a small amount for super long lasting protection.

There are no parabens, preservatives, fragrances, colours or perfumes in Skinnies and it DOES contain vitamin E that moisturises your skin while the other ingredients are protecting it.  Skinnies Sungel is made in New Zealand (tick), and isn’t tested on animals (double tick).

Want some? It’s $34.95 at selected stockists, or you can buy it online.

heat

It’s summer and it’s party season. If you like to straighten or curl or even blowdry your hair, you need to make sure you are using a really good heat protection product like Heidi’s Heat Styles: Heat Protection Spray by Schwarzkopf.  This is a girl’s best friend, providing 24 hour hold (perfect if you’ve got multiple parties to go to and your ‘do has to withstand many hours of socialising!), anti-frizz (hello humid NZ weather!) and natural shine. It is super easy to use and I have a 250ml bottle to give away!

Northland Society of Arts Members Summer Exhibition 2012

Obsidian IV by Meagan Kerr

Obsidian IV by Meagan Kerr

If you’re in Whangarei over summer, or just passing through, make sure that you drop by Reyburn House in the Town Basin – running from now until 27th January 2013 is the Northland Society of Arts Members Summer Exhibition, and it is definitely worth a look.

Reyburn House is currently alive with boats, brightly coloured flowers, beautiful landscapes and lush gardens, balanced out by some moody, quieter pieces like Obsidian IV (pictured above), which is a photographic print by yours truly!

Obsidian IV is part of a six image series (although only one is included in this exhibition) that explores avant garde style and pays homage to New Zealand fashion’s obsession with black. It is priced at $320, and like many of the pieces in the exhibition, it is available for purchase through Reyburn House.

Also included in the exhibition is Peony and butterflies, a mixed media piece (pictured below), by Northland artist Kim Kerr.  Kim teaches painting and mixed media classes to adults with a range of abilities, if you would like to know more about these, you can contact her at kimkerr@xnet.co.nz

Peony and butterflies explores the fragility of life and the soul moving on, and is priced at $55.
