How to apply makeup primer

How to apply makeup primer

I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect primer ever since I found out what primer was and what it claimed to do. To be honest, for a long time I couldn’t understand what the fuss was. My skin wasn’t silky smooth, I could never get that flawless finish and my makeup never seemed to last any longer than usual. It turns out, I was using it wrong.

And so I bring to you, my tips on how to apply makeup primer … the right way.

1. Apply your moisturiser and give it a few minutes to be absorbed into your skin. Well hydrated skin is an important part of making sure you have a great base to start off with.

2. Apply your primer, starting from around your nose and eyes, and working your way outward to your forehead, nose, chin and cheeks.

3. I use my fingers (make sure your hands are clean!) to apply my primer because it gives me more control over what I’m doing – I’m a very tactile person – but if you’d prefer a sponge, then by all means use that.

4. A little goes a long way, so make sure you use it sparingly – a small pea-size amount should be plenty! If you use too much primer, it can pill underneath your foundation.

5. Wait for your primer to “dry” before applying your foundation and concealer. This is my biggest tip! I leave mine for 5-10 minutes to allow it to set and it gives me a great base for the rest of my makeup.

I’ve been using Dermalogica’s AGE Smart SkinPerfect Primer over the last few weeks, and I have to say that I’m a convert! It’s SPF30 (an absolute essential! Want to know why you should be wearing SPF all year round? Check out this post), and it’s tinted. It gives me such a good base that I’ve even been wearing it without foundation over the top!

This was so helpful. I always apply to much, and have always been too impatient to let it dry. Definitely going to try with these tips later! (excuse my comment’s going crazy i’m catching up on all of your posts hehe)
In regards to the above I LOVE the beauty blender, i tried changing to brushes, and for some foundations I still use brushes, but mostly I find myself going back to the trust old damp beauty blender. I love the finish it gives (but I do apply with my fingers first or a brush just to get it on the skin as a lot of product gets wasted if you start with the sponge. 🙂 x

i always dab a little bit on my left hand so i don’t over use, then use a brush to apply. Then I let it sit for about 5 mins before putting my foundation on.

I tried primer for the first time at a makeup counter and I couldn’t believe how amazing it was. I know a lot of people like it because it makes make-up last longer but I love how smooth it makes my skin look and feel.

Awesome post! I think another mistake people make with primer is that they tend to apply too much – you usually only need a small pea-sized amount to cover the face. 🙂

Also just wanted to let you know that I nominated you for the “Very Inspiring Blogger Award”. Awesome way to share the love amongst bloggers! oxo

Yes! I think that’s been a problem of mine in the past too.

And wow, thanks so much lovely lady! xo

I love the Too Faced Primer, and I find putting on with hands uses heaps less than a beauty blender 🙂

I’ve never used a beauty blender, do you find them good for applying liquid foundation? xo
