Charlotte

Think Charlotte looks familiar? She was part of my original Fat Girls Shouldn’t Wear Stripes shoots! I was super excited to catch up with her recently to see how life has been treating her and see how her style has evolved.

What/who inspires your fashion choices?
My main fashion influences are Dita Von Teese and The Cherry Dollface. I have been a fan of Dita Von Teese for a few years now, I love her style and the elegance she brings to her fashion and life – she is one of the reasons I fell in love with vintage fashion. I also follow The Cherry Dollface on YouTube and love her vintage inspired tutorials on hair, makeup and fashion – I have learned a lot from following her channel. I am not one to keep up with fashion trends, but I do tend to stick to a more vintage look with my own twist to it.

You were involved in one of the earlier FGSWS shoots – how has your confidence/body love changed/grown since then?
Since the last shoot I feel that I am a lot more accepting of my body than I was, which has helped with my confidence and attitude towards my fashion decisions. I have also accepted that where I am at the moment with my life does not define what or who I will be for the rest of my life, but that the most important thing is to love myself for who I am and where I am right now.

Do you have any previous experience with body shaming? Tell us about it.
I have had experiences with body shaming in the past, I have always been big even when I was a child and I have struggled with my weight all my life. I was bullied as a child which was not a nice experience, but I have learned a lot through life and I think the happiest times in my life have been when I have been happy with myself and my body.

If you have a day when you’re not feeling great about yourself, how do you deal with that?
When I have a bad day where I am not feeling great about myself, I like to spend time with friends or family. Another thing I like to do, is do my hair, put makeup on and put on a nice outfit and tell myself that I am who I am, I have achieved what I have so far and I have so far to go, and I can do this all while looking my best when I love myself.

How do you show your body love?
I think I show my body love by dressing myself in items that make me feel my best, and taking time to do little things to pamper myself – whether it be a mani or pedi, or saying what I do love about my body – it seems to work for me.
